Academics labor relations: University of Zulia Case
The following paper aims to explore the labor relations of academic teachers and research staff of the University of Zulia (LUZ) which are deeply influenced by regulations included in the University Act, Regimentation of teaching and research staff, covenant act and federal agreement. The methodology consisted of documentary review of the regulatory framework and the reference specialized on the subject; in addition, interviews were conducted to the members of the Association of Professors of the University of Zulia (APUZ), delegates of the faculties, and president of the Federation Association of University Professors of Venezuela (FAPUV) in the 2005-2007/2008-2010 periods. The results indicate that the faculty of LUZ as well as other faculties of autonomous universities of the country comprises a social heterogeneous group and unusual labor market in general, with high participation in the discussion of their social benefits and salaries, and also in the contents of their teaching activities, research and extension. We conclude that this group is poorly paid and scantly valued. Their relations have been characterized by a constant struggle with the State by seeking improvements in their socio-economic conditions, which have deteriorated progressively, while being required more work and productivity in academic activities
